Mello Music Group is proud to release “Tell Me,” the second single from Apollo Brown and Hassaan Mackey’s “Daily Bread” album. The track will be available today for free download. Upon it’s July 19th digital release, “Daily Bread” debuted at #29 on iTunes’ Top Hip-Hop Albums chart and features guest appearances from Sean Born and Finale.
“Tell Me” features a visual performance from rapper Hassaan Mackey, who uses his descriptive abilities to set a vivid scene for his musings on the eternal paper-chase and struggle just to get by, “A nightmare on my street is always a reoccurring theme / Arguing with a fiend ’bout a dollar and a dream.” Using a low-key yet commanding delivery, his verses bring into question many of the circumstances listeners take for granted in their daily travels, with allusions to maturation, poverty, and one’s place within a grand scheme.
Musically, “Tell Me” is classic Apollo Brown, featuring hard-hitting percussion, punchy horn blasts, a lively bass line, and a dusty vocal sample. Like he did with Journalist 103 on The Left’s 2010 debut “Gas Mask,” Brown flashes his singular ability to build real chemistry with his partner-in-rhyme, catering to Mackey’s contemplative verses with a deep and soulful musical backdrop. Brown says, “It’s bassline heavy, with a guitar and one of my faux synth stabs that I create with the sample itself. Of course, the drums remain tough, and the overall beat has a great feel.” The rich track echoes equal measures of Apollo’s hometown of Detroit and Hassaan’s native New York. “Daily Bread” is now available on CD and digital download and will see a vinyl release August 16th.
